Welcome to winter on the farm. We are reminiscing about seasons
past, working members, WWOOF- ers, GYG Camp, good food and all that
goes with summer. Now that its nearly February already we are
organizing leftover seeds and formulating this year's order it will be
another great garden with more flowers than ever. It it will be so
beautiful...again! We all look forward to reconnecting to all our
community farmers, local foodies and all the great events and
connections another season will bring.

Snowflakes alternately drift slowly from the sky, then come in sideways when the wind picks up, on this dark, damp October day. Some of us are left wondering what happened to autumn, yet I'm certain an Indian Summer spell is waiting for its cue just behind this curtain of winter-like weather we're experiencing today.
Lori, Neils and working members have been busy buttoning up Harvest House Farm for the winter. Tomatillas, tomatoes and peppers were just harvested from the hoop houses. Nick just came in with two handfuls of fresh eggs. The pumpkins, in their assorted shapes, sizes and colors, have been brought in from the field. As a working member who has helped with Thursday harvests, it's hard to imagine our season is over already.
I'm learning a little something about food after four years at the farm helping out on harvest days! I laugh when I think back to Lori asking me to go out and harvest a particular vegetable. I looked quizzically at a fellow working member asking, "What does it look like?!" Kohlrabi, fennel, lemon balm... I finally convinced myself I could eat a flower and have come to love the peppery taste of nasturtium in my salads. Every week, especially toward the end of the season when our share bags are overflowing, we are challenged to learn to use food we might not normally purchase at the grocery store. I've taken the time to can salsa, have made killer tomatilla sauce, recently froze corn fresh off the cob (Okay, I did overcook it by getting distracted, but it will still taste great in something this winter.) and have come to love my food processor that slices and shreds at a push of a button in just seconds.
I hope the rest of you have learned something practical about food as you've enjoyed your garden share each week. I'm reclaiming some more space in my refrigerator as the last of the vegetables are being eaten. (Most of the science projects have been cleaned up.) And, I look forward to taking on a new vegetable next summer!

Words From The Wwoofers
As our time here at Harvest House draws to a close, it seems only right that we say a few words about our experience. Two weeks ago we were farming novices. Having grown up in London, England, we had had little to no exposure to the ways of life on an organic farm. Now, we're practically experts. Okay, not quite... but we have learned a huge amount from this place and the incredible people that make it what it is.
Here's a little summary of what's been going on here recently: The CSA harvest delivery is now underway, and consequently our past two Thursdays have been spent harvesting and bagging beautiful fresh salad. The fields are also filling up nicely; we've planted cabbages, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and more. Inga the cow is producing more milk than we've ever seen in our lives, and the team has been hard at work preparing the farm for the summer months in general. A busy few weeks it has certainly been, but busy around here means rewarding.
It's with regret that we leave tomorrow, though we know we can leave safe in the knowledge that we've experienced (and, in some small way, contributed to) something magical.

Welcome Inga and Gertie!
Inga and her year old daughter Gertie arrived this weekend from the Bitterroot Valley. It was a long journey especially for Inga as she is due to calve in less than 2 weeks time! Should be an exciting day on the farm when that happens. They seem to be happy and settling in nicely on the farm. So fun to be adding more cast and characters to our happy little slice of the Gallatin Valley :)

More Planting in the Spring Garden
Onions, Lettuce, Peas, Carrots and Beets have all been planted in some new rows in the spring garden. Katie from Portland, OR has been helping out a bunch as well as other locals from our CSA. The weather has been amazing and everything is responding joyously to all this mild spring warmth. Come on out and visit if you like it's a great time to be on the farm!

Planting Has Begun...
On Thursday we had Jamie, Rowan, Roberta, James, Lynn, Josh and Lori all pitch in for a day of turning over a couple rows and planting strawberries while relocating some garlic, chives and lemon balm. It was a beautiful day to get some work done outside the hoop houses. Roberta fed the hungry crew with and excellent stew and beer bread left over from the Earth Day Party that Matt brought along from 406 Brewing.
